Lessons
Structure
Lessons are relaxed and informal, and usually run for one hour. They can be student led (e.g. helping them to work through self-identified topics they would like support with), or structured in advance by me with a specific goal in mind (e.g. preparation towards an upcoming exam). The important thing is that they are relevant, engaging, and tailored to the specific requirements and capability of the individual student.
Most find that a session a week during term time is sufficient. Some students may benefit from more frequent lessons, however, depending on their circumstances. The holiday periods offer an opportunity either for a more intensive period of study (e.g. in the run up to an exam), or indeed as a well earned break.
The flexible nature of tutoring means that these and all other decisions can be made on a case by case basis and continually reviewed.
In person or online
Lessons are offered either in person at your home, or online.
Online sessions are conducted via Skype using a real-time interactive whiteboard and screen sharing facilities. Skype is free to use and setting up an account is quick and easy.
The whiteboard experience allows students to see handwritten notes as I make them. Workings, layout, notation, and diagrams are clear and easy to follow. The screen sharing facility means that both the student and I can share worksheets, past papers, homework assignments and any other digital documents in real-time on each others’ screens to ensure coherent interaction.
